“Building a temple to pray for the repose of your parents would be the way to repay your parent’s kindness”
In Korean culture, every generation treats the elders like their family even if they do not know each other. People in Korea do not have much interaction with their elders in blood since they live apart. Although all of the family members are away in Korea, they still connect and think about each other through gathering, sending gifts, and caring. Since they consider the kinship is important, the whole family including grandparents gather around to have some dinner on certain days such as Lunar’s New Year, Korean thanksgiving, and even on children’s birthdays.
Recognizing the importance of parents and family gathering, international students and families who immigrated to other countries sometimes hope to go back and stay in Korea even for short periods of time to achieve the feeling of connection back to Korean culture. Through roof-tile design motivated from grandparent’s house, it brings nostalgia of parent’s childhood as well as our memory of family gathering.
